Eero Aarnio

Finnish designer Eero Aarnio, born in 1932, studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki from 1954 to 1957 and began his own studio as an interior and industrial designer in 1962. Committed to new furniture ideas, he designed the Ball Chair in 1963, which was produced a few years later. The material (fiberglass) and its shape were completely new to the furniture industry at the time. In subsequent years, fiberglass, used in boat construction, became one of Aarnio’s favorite materials. Fiberglass, durable and easy to work, allowed Aarnio to design unconstrained ergonomic forms and intriguing new designs.
