Donato D’Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi, together with Jonathan De Pas, who passed away in 1991, are Italian designers who have been working in the industrial design sector since 1966. After the death of de Pas, the DDL design studio becomes D’Urbino e Lomazzi based in Milan.
They are one of the leading personalities in the world of Italian design who has seen very important collaborations with companies in the furniture sector. The D’urbino e Lomazzi studio operates mainly in the design of architecture, objects, installations, in the urban projects and interior design fields. In the 1960s they developed with particular interest the activity of creating temporary furniture and architecture, characterized by the use of advanced industrial materials and technologies.
They designed a series of pneumatic housing structures for the Italian pavilion at the World Expo in Osaka and for the 14th edition of the Milan Triennial.
In 1967, they designed the inflatable armchair Blow. In 1971 they created a modular bookcase for Longato called Brick and the Sciangai, a coat hanger for Zanotta, receiving the Compasso d’Oro award in 1979. While in 1972, they were invited together with the most representative figures of Italian design of that period, at Italy the New Domestic Landscape: exhibition dedicated to Italian style, which characterizes made in Italy design and contrasts with International style, organized by the MoMA of New York.
