Description
The first project by Joe Colombo for Oluce — and the only one created together with his brother Gianni — marks the beginning of two distinct creative paths: Joe moving from art into design, and Gianni devoting himself to the kinetic and programmed art movement.
Designed in 1962, Acrilica astonished the world with its exceptional innovation and bold use of materials, winning the gold medal at the XIII Triennial in Milan. At a time when methacrylate had been employed in lighting only in thin sheets, cut or thermoformed, the Colombo brothers envisioned a high-end reinterpretation: a thick, curved body that harnessed the conduction properties of the material. In this luxury piece, the light from a fluorescent lamp hidden in the painted steel base travels through the transparent structure to illuminate the head, producing a striking and almost magical effect.
Thanks to this extraordinary luminous movement, Acrilica is not only a lamp but also a true work of kinetic art — an exclusive icon of Italian design, admired for its modern elegance, refined innovation, and timeless sculptural presence.
